Sunday: The Tour Begins
We met with our tour guide in the breakfast room of the hotel about 3:00 p.m. Everyone had to provide proof of vaccination and a negative home Covid test. After a little introduction we headed out to explore. Our guide, Colleen, pointed out that the road a block from the hotel led to the Monument to Italian Unification in one direction and to a huge church in the other. She led us off to tour some fountains and piazzas on the way to dinner, including Piazza Navona and Trevi Fountain. We also stopped at the Pantheon.
Outside the Pantheon there was a huge street party with a band playing. Colleen told us they were celebrating Pentecost. See the dome below? That's the Pantheon and that light source is a hole in the roof. According to Colleen, if we had been there early that morning we would have seen a helicopter drop rose petals through the roof to celebrate.
