Monday: Off to Venice
Monday morning our fabulous tour was over, and we headed for the train station and Venice. It took a few mistakes but we ended up on the right train and got to Venice about lunch time. The ride was comfortable but I felt we saw as much of Italy from the train as you see of the US from the average interstate highway.
We had lunch at the Venice train station because it was easy and we were hungry. Next, we boarded the vaporetto to go to our hotel.

One that that we definitely need to work on is navigating by foot in strange places, but some nice folks pointed us in the right direction.
We stayed at the Hotel San Gallo which was conveniently located, just a few blocks from St. Mark's Square. The family running it was very nice and helpful and our room was beautiful. The only downside was the large flight of stairs between the front door and the lobby.

After dropping off our luggage we went exploring.
When we told Colleen, our Rick Steves guide, that we were heading to Venice after the tour, she told us to make sure we didn't spend so much time seeing attractions that we didn't see Venice. If anything, we ended up erring on the side of not seeing attractions. Monday afternoon we just wandered around Venice taking in the atmosphere.
I'm pretty sure it is a law in Venice that you have to get your picture taken on a bridge over a canal.
I don't remember where we got dinner or what we ate but it was probably something quick and simple.
When we got back to our hotel we noticed a text message on my phone. Our flight home had been changed. The airline wanted to send us from New York to New Orleans by way of San Francisco--after we had been on a plane across the Atlantic. No thank you! It took an hour on the phone but we were able to go through Houston instead.
